Daniel B. Chan, MD – Orthopaedic Trauma and Hip & Knee Replacement

The only thing i can say is Dr Chan is the best. He is so knowledgeable and professional. He took time to examine my elbow and explain me everything and also answered all of my questions and concerns.

I went to see Dr. Chan for a knee replacement. I arrived at his new surgery center at 5:15 am for a 6AM appointment. Since the surgery was so early, I let my husband sleep in and took an Uber. When I arrived, the building was still locked, no one answered the door or telephone so I was forced to wait out in the rain until after 6:00 am, when another tenant accessed the building. From the second I came out of anesthesia, I was screaming in pain. In my life I have never experienced pain like this and nothing brought relief. It was like that for the first 3 months. Sleep was virtually impossible except for 5-10 minutes snatches before the pain woke me up again. This has been the single worst experience of my life. Before surgery my knee was bone on bone, unstable on inclines and painful on stairs but as a cyclist, I could ride 50-100 miles with only mild stiffness for a short time after the ride. Now, If I ride 3 miles, I literally can’t walk the next day. Just getting up from sitting or lying down requires 1 minute or more of limping until the knee “warms up” and is less stiff & painful. Standing for more than 15 minutes and I have to get off the leg. I’ve had to invest in special floor mats to stand on just to make dinner. The knee is loud, laterally unstable and continually stiff and painful. The last time I was in Dr. Chan’s office, they took an X-ray of my hip and told me the problem is scar tissue. Which it’s not, the knee has as much range of motion as you can get with a knee replacement and that wouldn’t show up on an X-ray, let alone one of a different body part! I wish I’d never heard of Dr. Chan because my life is now miserable. I waited for the full year he said it would take to heal, with zero improvement, before I consulted another surgeon. As soon as I’ve had a Covid vaccine I’m doing the revision surgery and it’s only been 13 months.

Top notch skills, genuine caring and humility are my takeaway from my experiences with Dr. Chan and his excellent staff of dedicated professionals-Jeannie, Marjorie, Shirley and Caroline.
Since my total hip replacement surgery and quick recovery, I now have the freedom to pursue old and new interests, with an elevated activity level and quality of life I never thought possible. That includes an upcoming Spring ski trip to Colorado, for the first time in way too many years.
My only regret is not having had the surgery years ago.

This was truly a wonderful experience from the start and a professional group of health care providers. All my needs, goals and questions were cared for on a timely basis.

Dr. Chan is really a first class surgeon. He knows his field and does his job to the infinite degree. After he was referred to me all of my expectations were met to the fullest.
