Cintya and Donna are angels and have saved me tons on insurance by bundling my home and auto policies. I wish more customer service agents out there would smile as much as these gals do even while working under tremendous pressure of us clients coming in with our frustrations but then somehow come out feeling accomplished and happy for getting a task well done. I have been purchasing property and casualty insurance for over 45 years (and spent two as a lawyer representing insurers) and I have never before had an experience as poor as the one I had with State Farm and the Tim Hewitt Agency. Seeking a new insurer for our Florida Condo I sought a quote from Tim Hewitt and State Farm. I explained my present coverage and indicated I wanted the same insurance limits as that policy. I explained that there had been a claim on the present policy when an upstairs neighbor’s toilet cracked and flooded the units below, including ours. The Hewitt Agency checked with their Underwriting Department and said they would cover us regardless. The Hewitt Agency reponded promptly and quoted me a number ($1,248) that was significantly lower than my present premium and lower than other quotes I had received. Skeptical, I asked for the quote to be sent hard copy. That arrived by email two days later (a computer glitch was blamed for the delay). It took all of one second to realize that the quoted amount of property coverage was $9,000 when I had asked for $60,000. I called the Agency and was apologized to, in that the “computer reset to the minimum coverage” when the new quote was issued. I also asked on this call to increase the coverage on personal property. The new quote showing a date of March 21, 2018 showed a premium of $1,514.21. This was higher than my current premium but the reputation of State Farm convinced me to proceed.

A call that afternoon to the Hewitt Agency resulted in being told that unfortunately from the time the first quote was made (on March 15) there had been a rate increase and the new amount would be $1,780.43. I still, rather foolishly, opted to go ahead. I filled out the direct payment forms and received a binder for coverage. Then, having been misled as to the cost twice, I received a call that the Underwriters had an issue in that they viewed my claim of one of wind damage. I promptly provided the Hewitt Agency with proof of the nature of the claim and that it had been resolved. I learned today, that State Farm has a rule that they will not insure property unless there is a clean three year no claim record. So I was ten days down the road, had rejected other and actually lower cost policies to do business with State Farm only to be told they would not do business with me. It is absurd that the Hewitt Agency managed to talk me up from $1,248 to $1,780, assured me that they could write the insurance (others will as well, so there were hardly alone) and then declined.

Throughout this process I was misled or misinformed by the Hewitt Agency. I spent valuable time assembling documentation for them and engaging them to get the insurance in place. I advised my present company I would not be renewing, only to have the Hewitt Agency pull the rug out from under me. It was a lesson well learned. State Farm is hardly a good neighbor, and the Hewitt Agency is either incompetent of unable to provide the level of service that any customer has a right to receive.
